Chelsea legend urges Thomas Tuchel to keep talented young starlet at the club

John Terry advises Thomas Tuchel to keep Levi Colwill at Chelsea next season

John Terry wants Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel to use Levi Colwill next season instead of buying more centre-backs this summer, according to talkSPORT (h/t Express). The Blues legend believes the 19-year-old is a solution to the Stamford Bridge side’s lack of defenders.

Chelsea have been scouring the market for centre-backs. Kalidou Koulibaly has been signed from Napoli, but Tuchel is not yet done and wants two more defenders. PSG star Presnel Kimpembe and Sevilla’s Jules Kounde are the names being talked about currently.

Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen left Chelsea at the end of their contracts earlier this summer. There are also talks of Cesar Azpilicueta leaving. This makes the centre-back position a priority.

If the Blues manage to sign a couple more proven defenders, competition for a place in the XI within the squad would be high. Thiago Silva is already at the club with promising youngsters Trevoh Chalobah and Malang Sarr also in the mix.

Chelsea need stalwarts in defence

Colwill is another name in the squad currently vying for a place in the team. The 19-year-old is yet to appear for the senior side but his performances for Huddersfield Town last season in the Championship turned several heads.

The youngster wants a guaranteed place in the squad. He appears keen on leaving Chelsea in order to have more influence elsewhere with Brighton and Leicester City are some sides keeping an eye on the situation.

Sending the youngster on another loan move would be the perfect decision for the club. The Blues have been reluctant in the past to give young players time on the pitch, only for them to flourish elsewhere. Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham are recent examples.

Colwill has the potential and it would be wise to keep him on. But putting faith in a young centre-back with no experience of playing in England’s first-tier is a lot to ask for. Fans want the side to challenge for titles and to do that, Tuchel needs to be given the tools he requires.
