La Liga club encourages Chelsea to enter race for Manchester United target

Barcelona encourage Chelsea make a move for Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong

Chelsea have been given the go-ahead by Barcelona to pursue the signing of Frenkie de Jong this summer, according to PA (h/t Express). The Blaugrana have encouraged the Blues to pursue the Dutchman.

De Jong has been linked with a move away all summer with Manchester United pushing for the 25-year-old’s signing, but the Red Devils have been unable to strike a deal. London is now another potential destination for the former Ajax star.

While Todd Boehly met the Catalan club’s bosses in Spain to discuss Marcos Alonso’s situation. The idea of De Jong was brought up and the conversations seem to have been worthwhile.

Barcelona want Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta. The Blaugrana have been linked with two of our defenders. The 25-year-old Dutch national doesn’t seem keen on a move to Old Trafford this summer since they’re not in the Champions League.

Chelsea’s priorities should lie elsewhere

Chelsea’s transfer window as of yet hasn’t seen much action with Raheem Sterling the only player close to a move to the Bridge. We require defensive reinforcements, but talks of centre-backs have simmered down.

De Jong is a generational talent and a quality player for any team to have. But with that comes a monumental price tag. While our new owners seem eager to spend the money and invest in the club, we need to prioritise certain positions first.

In the middle of the park, we currently boast the talents of Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante and Jorginho, among others. Mason Mount is an offensive option we have in the midfield as well.

Connor Gallagher impressed people in his time with Crystal Palace and fans will certainly be looking forward to seeing him play in a Blue shirt next season. Ruben Loftus-Cheek is still at the club while Billy Gilmour is also back from his loan spell with Norwich.

De Jong is a big star and opportunities to sign someone like him rarely arise. But Chelsea should have other priorities this summer even if the Blues seem to have an upper hand in negotiations over our Premier League rivals.
