Romelu Lukaku’s Chelsea exit set to go through by end of this week, as per Fabrizio Romano

The Romelu Lukaku saga is finally nearing its conclusion. An unmitigated disaster for Chelsea now has an exit plan in sight and a one-year loan deal with Inter Milan set to be finalised in a matter of days.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea and Inter could reach an agreement by the end of this week. The two clubs remain a little apart on their valuation at the moment.

Chelsea have quoted a loan fee of €10million plus add-ons, while Inter’s latest bid is three million short of the Blues’ asking price. There’s also another important catch.

As things stand, there’s no discussion of an obligation to buy clause in the deal. If Lukaku’s return is not as impactful as Inter are hoping for, then it will be back to the drawing board for the Blues again next summer. The Belgian’s Chelsea contract runs until the summer of 2026.

Lukaku had a very important spell with the Nerazzurri, scoring goals at an impressive rate over two seasons, where he helped Antonio Conte’s side to the Scudetto in 2021. This prompted Chelsea to bring him back to the Bridge in a much-hyped move.

However, that has turned out to be a terrible decision on all fronts. Remarks during an unsanctioned Sky Italia interview completely burnt the bridge between Lukaku and Thomas Tuchel, not to mention that he went from undeniable to undesirable amongst Chelsea fans.

The sooner this ends, the better it is

Chelsea have so much to do this transfer window. The sooner Romelu Lukaku is on his way to Inter, the better it is for everyone at SW6 because they have substantial business to take care of.

There’s a lot happening behind the scenes already. Chairman Bruce Buck has stepped down and the Todd Boehly era is just getting started. It remains to be seen who the number nine for Chelsea is in these first few seasons under the American owners.

The club is yet to reach an agreement with Sevilla for Jules Kounde, while there’s been no formal offer for prime target Raheem Sterling either.

The sooner Lukaku is dealt with, the faster the club can get back to working on matters that actually matter. It’s a win-win for everyone, it shouldn’t be dragging on for too long from here. The end of the tunnel is in sight.
