According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo (h/t Metro), Xavi intends to sign Marcos Alonso from Chelsea after becoming the new Barcelona boss.
Marcos Alonso contributed a lot to Chelsea’s success in the last decade. He has featured in 200 games for the Blues, winning Premier League, Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup.
Despite being a long-serving player, he has fallen in the pecking order in the last few seasons. Under Frank Lampard, he only played a handful of games, and while his rate of appearances improved under current manager Thomas Tuchel, he isn’t a guaranteed starter.
The inclusion of Ben Chilwell in the team and his row of incredible performances have only made the situation tougher for the Spanish player.
It is believed that after the surprise return of club legend Dani Alves to the squad, new manager Xavi Hernández is looking to strengthen his left flank. The Catalan club has Jordi Alba in that position, but Xavi intends to provide him with a competitor to bolster his performance and increase the depth in the squad.
The 30-year-old Chelsea player may also be ‘interested’ in a return to Spain. He would be looking to get better game time under Xavi, who intends to rebuild the Blaugrana and become competitive again.
Chelsea current holds one of the most dynamic full-back duos in the Premier League. Reece James and Ben Chilwell gave some noteworthy performances under pressure in the previous few games this season. But Marcos Alonso’s experience and attacking appetite is an added advantage for the West London team and it remains to be seen if Tuchel sanctions a sale for an important squad former in the former Fiorentina ace.
