According to transfer news from Football.london, Chelsea could be all set to revisit their interest in Stefan de Vrij. Chelsea had been linked with a move for the Dutchman back in 2018. His agent, Mino Raiola is currently trying to find a new club for him and Inter Milan are also open to an exit.
A youth product of Feyenoord’s academy, De Vrij started out for VV Spirit in 1997. Lazio signed him in 2014 and he became an integral part of their backline for the four seasons he was at the club. In 118 appearances for the Italian side, he scored 10 goals. Ahead of the 2018 season, De Vrij made the switch to Inter Milan on a free transfer after his contract expired.
The Dutch defender has since then formed a formidable partnership with Milan Skriniar at the back for Inter. Last season, they were the bedrock on which Inter built their successful Serie A campaign. Despite the title, Inter have been in financial difficulties which could see them lose Skriniar to other clubs.
Chelsea were after the defender three years back. Now, they could revive that interest as he is likely to be a cheaper option than Jules Kounde. De Vrij is rated at €40million by Inter, half of what Kounde is valued at by Sevilla. His agent is currently trying to find a move away from the club due to Inter’s problems.
It seems Romelu Lukaku is not the only Inter Milan player that could make the move from San Siro to Stamford Bridge this summer (h/t Football.london). While De Vrij may not be one of those elite names with respect to central defenders, he is a solid, well-rounded defender. Add to that his modest valuation and there seems to be no reason as to why Chelsea might not revisit their interest in him.
