According to Sky Sports, Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta has had his red card against Aston Villa overturned. The defender will no longer be required to serve a three-match ban at the start of next season.
Chelsea might have lost against Aston Villa in the final game of the Premier League but still managed to secure fourth place. Leicester failed to win their game as they succumbed to a loss against Tottenham.
Nonetheless, the games were not without their fair share of drama as Leicester led twice only to implode right at the end. The Chelsea game was also following a similar vein as the Blues went down by two goals, while Ben Chilwell reduced the deficit to one. Right at the end of the game, Cesar Azpilicueta appeared to have flung his arm at Jack Grealish.
Referee Stuart Atwell deemed that to be violent conduct and brandished a red to the Chelsea man. That meant that Azpilicueta was banned for the next three matches which applied to the next season. However, the decision was appealed by Chelsea and it was eventually overturned.
Even if the ban stood, Azpilicueta would have been able to play the Champions League final as the domestic ban does not carry over to European competitions. Nonetheless, the Chelsea captain will now be free of any suspensions at the start of next season.
