Chelsea and Leicester City charged by FA for Stamford Bridge incident involving Antonio Rudiger and Daniel Amartey

According to a statement released by the Football Association (h/t Evening Standard), Chelsea and Leicester City have been charged for failing to control their players and officials in an altercation at Stamford Bridge.

The two teams faced each other on Tuesday night in a highly important Premier League fixture in London. The result of the match would have had a big impact on the top 4 standings in the table.

With the Blues leading 2-1 into stoppage time, Ricardo Pereira tackled Ben Chilwell in a reckless manner. This incensed Antonio Rudiger, who confronted the Leicester players.

One thing led to another and within a few moments, players and officials from both sides were involved in a heated confrontation pitch-side. Daniel Amartey, who was on the bench, was yellow-carded for his part in the incident.

Facing the consequences

The midfielder had earlier angered Chelsea fans by throwing the Chelsea pennant in the dressing room at Wembley after the Foxes beat the Blues in the FA Cup final.

The statement by the FA reads:

“Chelsea FC and Leicester City FC have both been charged with a breach of FA Rule E20.1 following their Premier League fixture on Tuesday 18 May 2021. It is alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their players and/or club officials conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour during the 93rd minute.”
