According to news from Metro, Ian Wright feels that Chelsea should be looking to replace misfiring striker Timo Werner. The Arsenal and Premier League icon insisted that Chelsea and Werner are wasting too many chances to score.
Despite only joining the club this season, he has failed to match his previously high standards this season. Werner was a big-money signing from Leipzig last summer and was expected to continue his goal-scoring exploits in England.
However, two goals since November tells you the story. It’s not that he is playing entirely bad but the fact that he is not taking his chances when they are coming should worry the club. Wright spoke about the same.
‘When you look at him and the chances he misses, no matter how low your confidence is, he shouldn’t be missing those for the calibre of striker he’s supposed to be.
We know he scored a lot of goals for RB Leipzig, but even when you’re not playing well and your confidence is low, he shouldn’t be missing them and then you start overdoing it. But if it carries on as it is with Werner, if you can get a swap deal and get someone else in, there’s no way they’re not thinking about that.’
While Werner seems to retain the trust of Thomas Tuchel and has performed well in recent games, he still does not have the goals to show for those efforts.
Given the talent Werner has, it would be rather premature to give up on him so easily. However, the situation needs to be sorted before the club pulls the plug on Werner.
