Report – Thomas Tuchel could take over Chelsea training today

Thomas Tuchel could make the bench for Chelsea against Wolves

According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Thomas Tuchel is set to fly into London to take over at Chelsea today.

The German manager is keen to hold his first training session at the club, a day after Blues legend Frank Lampard was sacked after 18 months in charge. If all goes well, Tuchel could be in the dugout when the Blues take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Premier League on Wednesday.

The 47-year-old will initially arrive with three staff members. Thankfully, the COVID-19 tests and work permits have already been sorted, paving the way for them to enter the Chelsea bubble.

Tuchel and Chelsea have already come to an agreement and the German will pen an 18-month deal. This can be extended by another year.

Given the volatile nature of the Chelsea hot seat, a short-term deal appears to be the best bet. There is no reason why a longer one won’t be offered in the future, provided Tuchel succeeds.

The 47-year-old will come face to face with his new squad before training. It remains to be seen if there will be any change in the pecking order in the weeks to come.

Tuchel will also come face to face with Thiago Silva, his skipper at PSG. The 36-year-old is one of Chelsea’s top players and could help the players get a better idea of their new coach’s demands.

The German will also come to face with Antonio Rudiger and Jorginho, two players who were linked with PSG during his stint at the Parc des Princes. Both players have seen their stock fall of late. Whether Tuchel’s arrival presents them an opportunity to salvage it remains to be seen.

Unlike Lampard, Tuchel has more experience in the management game. He won back-to-back titles with PSG, as well as two cups. He also guided them to the Champions League final last season where they lost to Bayern Munich.

It promises to be an interesting marriage of alliances at Chelsea.
