Of all the players signed by Chelsea this summer, it can be argued that Thiago Silva has offered the best value for money.
Despite joining the club on a free transfer, his contribution in fixing a leaky defence has been priceless. His performances have not gone unnoticed, with certain doubters even turning into believers. One of them is former Blues star Joe Cole.
According to Football.london, Cole admits that he has changed his mind regarding the Chelsea defender.
He admits he initially had doubts regarding the player’s ability to perform because of his age and the demands of the Premier League.
“Traditionally, players of that age coming into the Premier League, it’s very difficult.”
While Cole may not have been wrong to be sceptical, it is a testament to Silva’s ability that he has managed to ease in.
Silva’s performances have convinced Cole that he is among the best centre-backs in the league. In fact, he argues that only Virgil van Dijk could be ahead of him in the honours list.
“I don’t think they make centre-halves like him now, apart from van Dijk, he’s the best in the league, maybe there’s an argument for it.”
Cole goes on to add that Silva has now set the benchmark for other Chelsea defenders. Whoever partners him in defence know the levels they are expected to perform at.
“That’s the level you want to get at if you want to class yourself as a world-class centre-half.”
Silva has undoubtedly been one of the best signings of the summer window. At 36, he appears to be playing much better than some defenders in their prime. Age is just a number and Thiago Silva is living embodiment of that quote.
The argument may rage as to who is better -Van Dijk or Silva. However, what cannot be argued is the positive impact both players have had at their clubs.
