Chelsea veteran rejects chance to join Serie A giants as future remains uncertain

Willian rejects contract offered by MLS side Inter Miami

According to the Telegraph, Chelsea midfielder Willian has rejected the chance to join David Beckham’s new MLS side Inter Miami.

The newest side in the MLS, Inter were keen to bring in the Brazilian. They have made a huge offer for the player that has since been rejected.

According to the article, he was approached by David Beckham with a three-year offer. The 31-year-old had been holding out for a contract of the same duration at Chelsea.

The fact that he still rejected it could stem from comments he made about his future earlier. The Samba star is keen to play on at the highest level and end his career back in his homeland with Corinthians.

Given that a three-year commitment could be one of his last if not last contracts he signs, his decision to pass it on is understandable.

Another option continues to be Tottenham, who are currently managed by former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese is familiar with Willian and is keen to bring him to the Lane.

With the midfielder’s contract up this summer, Spurs could pick up a vastly proven and experienced player for free.

Willian has been central to Chelsea’s bid to finish in the top four, especially since the restart. He has scored four goals in the last six games and is only behind top scorer Tammy Abraham in the goals tally.

If anything, Willian’s demand for a three-year deal is deserved, especially if he gets us into the top four. He has not let the breakdown in talks affect his form on the pitch and has kept impressing.

Moving to Spurs will be a blot in his career, having served seven loyal years at Chelsea. Our London rivals lack both ambition and identity, and are anti-thesis to Willian’s belief of playing at the highest level.

The Brazilian still has much to offer. Chelsea will do well to retain him.
