Is there space at the Bridge for Michael Essien?

One of nine players aged 30 or over in the Chelsea side, Essien may well find himself on the transfer list come June-time, along with a host of the others, the likes of Hilario, Ferreira, Benayoun and Meireles are out of favour and have just the one start between them this season. It certainly seems like this will be the summer that the older players get shown the door.

However, is it possible that Essien still has a future at the club? At just 30, and with 18 appearances for Real Madrid this season, its still quite possible. He has certainly shown he can still play at the top level of the game still.

Lampard's personal goals have cost us.

With Super Frank on 200 goals for the club, there is no doubting that we all want him to strike three more times and break Bobby Tamblings 40-year record.

However, has his pursuit of the record hindered our progress this season? I think so, and the facts suggest so too.

In 24 Premier League games this season, the midfield man has scored 12 times, but currently has 0 assists. If you compare that to other seasons, you will notice a huge difference.

If Lampard leaves Chelsea, he should move to LA

While it remains uncertain whether Frank Lampard's Chelsea stay will be extended beyond the summer, the possibility of him leaving is becoming increasingly likely with each passing day, whether Blues fans want to admit it so or not.

Roman not willing to change his new regime, for anyone.

After Didier Drogba’s acrimonious departure last summer, it was perhaps understandable that this would be Frank Lampard’s last year at the club, despite the pleas of Chelsea fans for one more season at least.

There is no doubt our number 8 can still play at this level, a double helped sink Everton weeks ago, and although only playing 12 times in the league so far, he has grabbed 6 goals, outstanding for a midfielder, but par for Frank Lampard.

Rafa’s Frank Assessment

Successive 0-0 draws, followed by a 3-1 defeat, and its because his squad are tired, quipped Rafa Benitez this week. He claims that the Chelsea squad is simply not big enough, and those that are there, are just too tired, having to compete in a Champions League campaign alongside the domestic cups.

In fairness, he may well have a point. Di Matteo’s start was great, but just 19 players had been used by Chelsea this season, and Marko Marin became the 20th last week, which is the lowest total in the league.

Lampard Has More Goals In Him

With new Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez having admitted that club legend Frank Lampard may leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, the Blues could be losing a midfielder who has provided them with almost 200 goals in fewer than 400 games.

An absolutely astonishing scoring record for a midfielder, Lampard has a ratio of slightly better than one in three for Chelsea in the Premier League and almost a goal every other game for the club overall.

Time For The Emergence of New Heroes

It hasn’t been the greatest couple of weeks for both Ashley Cole and John Terry, but they will no doubt put it behind them as they look to drive Chelsea to a first Premier League title since 2010.

However, it will be their last chance in the Chelsea blue, as Roman and Roberto’s new age policy is right in play now, meaning neither will be likely to get an extension to their current deals, with Cole’s ending this season, and Terry’s next year. Midfield talisman Frank Lampard will also be likely leaving, possibly even in January, with LA Galaxy interested.

Rotation Is The Key For Title Challenge

Should Lampard be starting, or should he be on the bench? That is a question that has been thrown around numerous times in the past few weeks, and there is only one true answer for it. Rotation.

Mikel and Ramires seem the long-term and more energetic option in the middle, but whilst Ramires is nearly the complete article, I believe Mikel has a way to go, especially after making some costly mistakes over the past year or two at the Bridge.

Can Di Matteo Find The Midfield Balance?

Oscar dos Santos Emboaba Júnior (no idea why nobody calls him this) stole the headlines with his incredible introduction to the Chelsea faithful against Juventus, but I hope this doesn’t hide an underlying problem, why is there not enough quality central midfielders to support this obvious attacking flair?

While I disagree with the media’s insistence that Andre Villas Boas was forcing the likes of Frank Lampard out of the team, the need for rotation, considering Lampard’s advancing years, seems necessary
