Arsenal legend Paul Merson took a dig at Chelsea, questioning Todd Boehly’s transfer strategies and says they have made a YouTube team

Arsenal legend Paul Merson expresses his disbelief at the poor season by Chelsea. He delivers harsh questioning about Todd Boehly‘s recruitment strategies by talking about how they wasted funds on undeserving players.

Merson believes Chelsea have made up a ‘YouTube team‘ as they spent billions on undeserving players who were never worth that much. He mentions names like Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.

Enzo Fernandez is one of the most expensive signings in Premier League history but he has massively failed to perform well at Chelsea. It is no secret that throughout his career at Chelsea, there were no ‘wow’ moments as he failed to justify his £107 million price.

Similarly, Chelsea signed Moises Caicedo for a staggering record-breaking fee of £115 million. When a player joins a club for such a huge fee, it is natural to expect instant results. Caicedo has failed to meet the expectations he was carrying and it seems like this transfer is not at all justified.

Paul Merson expressed his disappointment with the Blues by saying:

“Three years ago Chelsea were winning the Champions League and now they are getting thrashed by Arsenal. Not long ago it was Arsene Wenger’s 1000th game and Chelsea beat Arsenal 6-0. Look at it now.”

“To spend a billion pounds on those players… Wow. I mean, I don’t know who would sign half of them. Enzo Fernandez for £100m and £115m on Moises Caicedo. Who’s gone out with the vision that these are going to be the best two midfield players in world football? Because they should be for nearly a quarter of a billion pounds. They should run the show every game.”

“It almost seems like agents are sending videos of a player, five-minute clips, and Chelsea have gone, ‘I’ll take him. Oh my God, how good is he? Look at his clips. Look at him’. They’ve just got a YouTube team together. Like they’ve looked at clips and put it together and gone, ‘this team can play. Look at these.’ But it’s a million miles off.”

Arsenal’s Premier League championship chances remain alive following a sensational second-half performance in which the Gunners thrashed Mauricio Pochettino‘s side. The Gunners trounced the Blues by a stunning 5-0.

It is clearly a tough time for the Boss

The Premier League clash between Chelsea and Arsenal was a clear reminder of how much the squad relies on Cole Palmer. Palmer was not on the squad due to some illness, giving the players a perfect opportunity to show the world that they can win even without their top scorer. But, as we all know, they failed terribly at that.

More Chelsea news

Paul Merson’s verdict is a perfect suggestion for Todd Boehly that they need to sign quality players rather than just looking for the expensive ones and assuming that they will be perfect according to their price. Millions of pounds are wasted if the players can’t even handle the pressure of high-level games.

Chelsea currently sits in ninth place in the Premier League standings, with hopes of catching up with sixth-place holders Newcastle United United, who are just three points away from them. If the Blues want their ‘title winners’ reputation back, then they need to fix the issues and come back stronger in their future games.
