Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Thiago Silva has finally made his future decision, and it won’t go down well with Chelsea fans after the centre-back confirmed he will leave the club following the culmination of the campaign.
The 39-year-old will become a free agent once his contract expires at the end of the season. The centre-back has been courted by his boyhood club, Fluminense, but as of now he is keeping his options open and feels he can still play at the top level.
The former AC Milan defender joined Chelsea as a free agent in 2020 and became a household name, making 149 appearances for the Blues and winning the Champions League.
Despite receiving offers during the January transfer window, the Brazilian chose to stay at Chelsea in order to encourage the development of young players. After his stint at Chelsea ends, it will be interesting to see what Silva decides for his future.
Under Thomas Tuchel, he developed a strong rapport and steadiness at the back. Silva never had an unacceptable game and was always the manager’s favourite defender despite being in his late 30s.
His exit will be a big blow for the Blues, given they will be left with no experienced player at the back and will have to look for a defender to fill in Silva’s shoes.
Due to their defensive errors and shortcomings, Chelsea have had one of the worst defences this season, giving up a lot of goals. The Blues will need to bring in an experienced veteran to mentor the other young centre-backs and shore up their defensive inadequacies.
It will be difficult to identify a defender of Silva’s ability who had such a terrific time and built an incredible legacy at the club during his four-year tenure.
