Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino reveals that Conor Gallagher needs to improve his goalscoring ability to be considered for the England national squad. The Argentine manager believes that Gallagher’s overall quality this season has caught the attention of Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate, potentially earning him a call-up for England’s March friendlies.
Gallagher has been instrumental in Chelsea’s success this season, emerging as one of the team’s key players under Pochettino’s guidance. He has been a regular starter, featuring in 37 games across all competitions and contributing four goals and seven assists.
However, despite his impressive performances, the 24-year-old’s future at the club remains uncertain. Chelsea are open to selling Gallagher next season to generate significant profit and ensure compliance with Financial Fair Play regulations.
Following the announcement of the England squad ahead of March international friendlies with Brazil and Belgium, Southgate has once again picked Gallagher, and Pochettino feels he has convinced England’s manager with his performance this season. He further said via Football.London:
‘’The other challenge for him is to score more goals. I think the beginning of the season was really tough for him, but now he’s scoring and feeling more confident, and I think growing in this reaction is the most important thing for him.’’
While the 24-year-old star may not have been among our top goal scorers, he has certainly enhanced his goal-scoring ability and contributed several crucial goals this season.
The wealth of talent available to Gareth Southgate for the England national team presents a challenge when it comes to squad selection, particularly in midfield. With such exceptional players to choose from, finding the right balance becomes a daunting task for any manager.
Being selected for the England squad is undoubtedly an honor, signifying the recognition of one’s potential by the manager. Gallagher’s consistent inclusion in the squad since last season is a testament to Southgate’s admiration for his performances.
Gallagher will do well to heed Pochettino’s words. After all, this is the person who got Harry Kane firing and turned Dele Alli into a dynamic midfielder. There is no reason why the Chelsea star cannot follow in the latter’s footsteps.
