Ian Maatsen terms his Chelsea debut was a special moment in his football career

Ian Maatsen reflects on his journey in football, which began at the age of seven when he joined Feyenoord’s academy. Over the years, he honed his skills at various academies in the Netherlands, including Sparta Rotterdam and PSV Eindhoven. His talent caught the eye of Chelsea, and after successful trials, he joined the Blues’ academy.

Making his senior debut for Chelsea in a Carabao Cup match against Grimsby Town under manager Frank Lampard was a dream come true for Maatsen. Subsequently, he embarked on loan spells at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, and Burnley, gaining valuable experience and exposure to different playing styles and environments.

Reflecting on his journey, Maatsen describes it as a fulfilling experience, filled with highs and lows. Despite the challenges, he remains grateful for the opportunities he has received and looks forward to continuing his development and making an impact in the world of football. Reminiscing his earlier days, the fullback said via the Guardian:

‘’A dream come true. Playing at a full stadium with the big boys was amazing. Even to this day, when I see pictures, I say, ‘Wow.’”

Maatsen’s emergence as a promising talent in the Netherlands drew attention from Chelsea, highlighting the club’s keen eye for young prospects. While many young players aspire to represent Chelsea, Maatsen’s journey from the academy to making his debut under Lampard is a testament to his dedication and talent.

Chelsea’s academy has nurtured numerous young players, but not all of them go on to achieve recognition at the highest level. The 22-year-old’s inclusion in the first team marked a significant milestone in his career, reflecting his hard work and commitment to his craft. His debut for Chelsea was a momentous occasion, realizing a dream shared by many aspiring footballers.

Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen has two assists and a goal in the Bundesliga this season.

Maatsen’s development continued on loan spells, with his time at Burnley proving particularly fruitful. His standout performances earned him recognition, including the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month award for January. Additionally, his contributions played a vital role in Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League this season.

Chelsea’s decision to recall Maatsen was based on his significant progress and fully developed skill set. His impressive displays during pre-season further reinforced the club’s belief in his abilities, making his return to Chelsea a logical step in his career progression.

Last summer, Chelsea initially accepted Burnley’s offer for Maatsen, but the fullback himself rejected the proposal, opting to remain at Chelsea. However, with limited opportunities for playing time at the Blues, joining another club on loan emerged as the most viable option. Unfortunately, Maatsen’s loan spell under Pochettino did not unfold as anticipated.

Nevertheless, Maatsen’s potential remains undeniable, and he possesses the qualities to establish himself as one of the premier fullbacks in the game. His recent performances at Borussia Dortmund have showcased his talent, with the Dutchman already contributing two assists and one goal. His impressive displays earned him recognition as the January Bundesliga Rookie of the Month, further affirming his promising future in the sport.
