Former Chelsea star Gary Cahill says he couldn't find any club which forced him to retire from football
Former Chelsea player Gary Cahill opens up about his retirement and reiterates that he had to hang his boots after he couldn’t find any club following spells with Crystal Palace and Bournemouth.
The former Aston Villa defender spent the majority of his career at Chelsea when he joined the Blues in 2012 and went on to win three Premier League titles, a Champions League, and two FA Cups. The former player will return to Stamford Bridge Field once again for the England XI at Soccer Aid in June.
It will bring back many memories for the player, who enjoyed an incredible career at Chelsea before he left in 2019. He also served as captain of the club in the 2017–18 season when John Terry left the Blues.
Under Maurizio Sarri, he announced he would leave the club after the culmination of the 2018-19 season, and following his exit, he spent brief spells at Palace and Bournemouth before quitting the sport. In his recent interview, Cahill revealed why he decided to retire from football, speaking to Standard Sport, he said:
“I feel lucky in the way I retired that it didn’t creep up on me due to injury, which sometimes happens to players. I just didn’t get a club. It was a natural end. I thought I might finish after signing for Bournemouth anyway. Personally, it has made it easier for me. I have spoken to some ex-players, and some people really struggled. I feel lucky and content with retiring.’’
Cahill announced his retirement from football because he believed the moment was right. He was aware of his accomplishments in club football, particularly at Chelsea, so it’s not surprising that he enjoyed the game and was a top centre-back who anchored the Blues’ defence alongside John Terry.
We signed him during a crucial time when we reached the semi-final of the Champions League. Due to David Luiz’s injury, the former England international had the opportunity to prove himself in the semi-final matchup with Barcelona. He performed admirably, earning a spot beside Terry as the Blues advanced to the Champions League final and won the tournament, and the rest is history.
He relished many excellent times at the club and left Chelsea with pride and honour.
