Chelsea’s release clause in Marc Guehi deal will alert the Blues if other clubs make any offer for centre-back

Chelsea can spoil Liverpool’s and Manchester United’s parties after both giants have expressed interest in signing Blues former academy player and current Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

According to the Telegraph, (h/t Express), the Reds are looking to add more defenders to their backline and see Guehi as a perfect candidate to fill the position, while United are keeping an eye on Palace’s defender.

But the Blues, who inserted a clause in the 23-year-old defender’s contract when he joined the South Londoners nearly three years ago, said the clause will alert the Blues if any club has made an offer for their former player, which can see them match the proposal.

However, Chelsea don’t have a buy-back agreement, which is common in most of the clauses. Nonetheless, Palace are said to be holding out for the club-record fee of £50 million for the centre-back.

With players like Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana, Axel Disasi, Levi Colwill, and others providing ample defensive depth, it is unclear if the Blues will shell out that much money to sign their former player in the summer.

Meanwhile, Thiago Silva could leave the Blues at the end of the season when his contract expires and maybe it could force the Blues to look for his successor. But it remains to be seen if the West Londoners would want to shell out that much for Guehi.

But the biggest worry has been injury because half of our players are still sidelined. This is the necessary obstacle that could force the team to go somewhere for a defence in the upcoming season.

Having an experienced defender instead of a youthful centre-back will benefit the team. Guehi, who has been playing in the Premier League and undoubtedly has enough exposure now, is another player we could think about adding.
