Mauricio Pochettino acknowledged Gary Neville’s comments on Chelsea’s 0-1 defeat to Liverpool and asserted that it was not fair to make such remarks. The former Manchester United player labelled the Chelsea Carabao Cup final loss ‘billion-pound bottle jobs.’
Chelsea had plenty of chances to wrap up the game in normal time, but their missed chances came back to haunt them. After heading into extra-time, it appeared the match would once again proceed to penalties, but Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk’s header in the 118th minute ensured the Reds’ tenth League Cup trophy.
Van Dijk also had a goal disallowed earlier, but the captain stood up in extra time to secure another Carabao Cup title. Meanwhile, Pochettino, who is yet to win a domestic cup competition was once again denied a silverware with an English club.
After the loss, Pochettino spoke to the media, and when asked about Neville’s comment, (h/t Metro), he said:
‘’I don’t hear what he said, but I think if you compare the ages of the two groups, I think they’re similar. But look, I have a good relationship with Gary, and I don’t know how I can take that comment. It’s his opinion, but I respect his opinion.’’
It’s inevitable that this club will face criticism for spending so much money and still failing to produce results on the pitch. Players will have to deal with more insults since we missed our opportunity to win the trophy and it came back to bite us in extra-time.
Liverpool had the same set of players, and the majority of their senior players were injured, so it was a 50-50 match, and we should have won given we had five big chances, but we failed to convert either of them, which is certainly a shame for us.
People will keep blaming us regardless of the result because the amount of money that has been spent on this squad is certainly massive, and they will continue to taunt us. It’s up to the players how they bounce back from this defeat, as we still have a long season ahead.
