Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was disappointed with Moises Caicedo in Chelsea defeat to Middlesbrough

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink wasn’t impressed with Moises Caicedo’s performance following a 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup first leg.

Chelsea were down one goal going into the second leg as Caicedo could not muster much of an answer in the face of a Middlesbrough goal.

Hayden Hackney’s 37th-minute strike was enough to see the Boro secure a narrow win and head into the second leg with an advantage, as they will be just 90 minutes away from securing their place in the final of the Carabao Cup.

However, the goal saw Caicedo and Levi Colwill come under massive scrutiny. The Ecuadorian man’s marking came into question when the midfielder lost his man, leading to the Middlesbrough goal. Hasselbaink was disappointed with the 21-year-old’s performance, (h/t Metro) and told Sky Sports:

”With Caicedo… It becomes a one-versus-one. If you have determination, you don’t lose your one-versus-one. It’s a simple one.”

While Caicedo’s performance was undoubtedly subpar and he ought to have pursued his man, it would be unjust to hold him responsible for the loss given that mistakes are unavoidable. Ideally, he would have admitted his mistake and corrected it. Apart from that, though, he was magnificent and the only player who appeared to have given the game his all and wanted to win it for his team.

Aside from that, we ought to have made repairs during the match because we had many opportunities that were too simple to turn into goals but we lacked the precision. It’s time for Mauricio Pochettino to quit using Levi Colwill as a left-back who was terrible and was often exploited. The England international never seemed at ease in that position.

Every Chelsea player, particularly Cole Palmer, who wasted four excellent opportunities, should atone for their mistakes when we host Middlesbrough in the second leg at Stamford Bridge.
