Jose Mourinho’s Roma sacking puts £37m deal in jeopardy for Chelsea

Chelsea could struggle to sell Romelu Lukaku to AS Roma after they sacked Jose Mourinho

According to Mirror, AS Roma sacking Jose Mourinho could have a big impact on Chelsea wanting to sell Romelu Lukaku to the Serie A club next summer. The Portuguese signed the Belgian striker and revived his goalscoring form under him. The 30-year-old has eight goals in 17 matches in Serie A.

However, since Mourinho has been sacked now, it puts into question whether Roma will retain the former Inter Milan striker in the forthcoming summer window under Daniel de Rossi, who is now the new manager of Roma.

It is understood that the ‘agreement is in jeopardy’ after Mourinho’s sacking, while De Rossi has been appointed temporarily, and if they don’t sign the Belgian permanently, he will return to Stamford Bridge.

During the last summer window, the former Everton striker was linked with a move to plenty of Serie A clubs, and given he wanted to leave Chelsea, Inter were favourites to re-sign him. The striker however negotiated talks with Juventus, which led to Nerazzurri pulling out of the race.

However, Old Lady fans protested against Lukaku’s signing, which saw the striker return to Chelsea, but by the end of the summer window, the Blues were able to strike a deal with Roma.

Lukaku had a spectacular start to the new Roma season, largely because of Mourinho’s backing. With the departure of the former Blues head coach, it will be curious to see if De Rossi will help Lukaku remain a potent striker in front of goal.

Lukaku is a controversial figure, and he has barely stayed at a club for long because whichever team he joins, he always creates something and ruins his image among the fans. He did at Chelsea and then at Inter, and we don’t know if he will be open to remaining at Roma given that they sacked Mourinho.

It is unclear if De Rossi will continue to manage him due to his positive relationship with the Portuguese manager. This is mostly dependent on his performance, as he frequently experiences diminishing form between seasons. It will be difficult to find him a new suitor if he comes back.
