Ornstein explains Chelsea’s stance on outgoings in 2024, says club unlikely to retain defender Pochettino rates for ‘experience’

Thiago Silva continues to face an uncertain future at Chelsea despite stepping up for Pochettino this season

Thanks to their shopping spree, Chelsea are not short of players across all positions bar perhaps upfront. There is an overwhelming amount of players at Mauricio Pochettino‘s dispersal. Probably one of the reasons why the manager is able to cope with the increasing injury list. However, this hasn’t seemingly satiated the club’s hunger and they seem to be on the lookout for new recruits.

However, the Blues are unlikely to be inactive in the coming windows. Speaking on the matter, The Athletic’s David Ornstein has stated that

“I expect Chelsea’s recruitment to be run by their two sporting directors, supported by the ownership, and Pochettino will have an input but no increased power.”

He further revealed his anticipation regarding Chelsea’s pursuit of a forward and a centre-back to replace Thiago Silva. The Brazilian is one of the finest of his generation and still packs a punch. However, it is no secret that his powers are now on the wane.

Thiago Silva, aged 39, is handling Chelsea’s backline gracefully. However, the player himself realises his professional career is at its twilight. Silva has now played 87 Premier League games aged 36 and over – a domestic record for any outfield player. His future depends on how desperate the Blues bosses are to have him around.

Thiago Silva – A veteran among all

Chelsea has recruited a horde of fine talents from their academy and through purchases. But none can boast the leadership skill and experience as much as Thiago Silva. He has played every minute for the Blues in the Premier League this season. Chelsea suffered a 2-0 loss against Everton the previous week and the Brazilian was on the bench that game.

Considering the present scenario, it is evident that the former PSG man’s services are very well required by the gaffer. Although, this could change should Pochettino bring in a string centre-back option in the upcoming transfer window. Talking to Sky Sports Italia (h/t Mirror), he revealed,

“The end of my career is approaching and it’s not easy. I have to think if I retire or if I continue, and where I go.”

It is imperative that Chelsea keep moving ahead and not get starry-eyed by the heroes from the past. Silva has been an excellent servant to this football club and it is imperative that we do not make him overstay his time. You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. Silva is a player on the decline and we rather the club let him move on with his head held high and bring ina an able repalvcement who can meet eh position his for years to come.

David Ornstein’s expectation of the outcome seems more realistic. But if we consider the state that Chelsea is in, having someone like Silva can only be beneficial. Nevertheless, this transfer saga will be quite eventful for the fans in the coming months.
