Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino talks about Christopher Nkunku after Wolves loss

In the aftermath of Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers, manager Mauricio Pochettino shed light on the performance of Christopher Nkunku, who made a significant impact coming off the bench to score the Blues’ lone goal.

The 26-year-old French international, making only his second appearance for Chelsea since his summer transfer, has faced challenges due to a prolonged absence caused by a knee injury.

Pochettino acknowledged the need to manage expectations surrounding Nkunku, highlighting the careful approach taken to integrate him back into the squad. The decision to introduce him after 60 minutes was a strategic move aimed at easing him back into competitive action.

Here is what the boss told the club’s official website on Nkunku:

‘We cannot put too much pressure on him, he’s been out for a very long time and that is why he came on after 60 minutes – to help ease him in.’

‘He’s a quality player who can score goals and we are pleased he did that today, although of course we are disappointed not to win the game.’

‘Christo needs time to arrive in this way but we are very confident in him to get to his best and be a key player for us.’

Despite the disappointment of the overall result, Pochettino expressed satisfaction with Nkunku’s contribution, particularly his ability to find the back of the net. The manager highlighted Nkunku’s quality as a player capable of scoring crucial goals, indicating the positive impact he can have on the team’s attacking prowess; as he did against Wolves albeit in a lost cause.

Pochettino also stressed the patience required for Nkunku to fully acclimate and reach his peak performance. The manager’s confidence in the former Paris Saint-Germain man’s ability to evolve into a key player suggests a strategic and long-term perspective on integrating Nkunku into the squad.
