Mauricio Pochettino revealed his TED talk during half-time after going down to 10 men in a 3-2 win over Brighton & Hove Albion and told the players they had an opportunity to play as a team.
Chelsea’s 10-man disadvantage against Brighton came when Conor Gallagher’s rash challenge in the 45th minute earned him a red card, putting Chelsea to the ultimate test.
A brace from Enzo Fernandez and a solitary goal from Levi Colwill ensured well-deserved three points for the Mauricio Pochettino side, who were tested for the entire 105 minutes.
Brighton had numerous opportunities to equalise, but Chelsea persevered and refused to give up despite being down to ten men. It was a fantastic way to recover from their humiliating 4-1 loss against Newcastle United.
Pochettino later revealed what he told the players during halftime and how they could remain better than the Seagulls, (h/t Evening Standard), he told the reporters:
“At halftime, I told them it was 2-1, and these things happen. It is a great opportunity and a massive challenge for us to show we are a team, and it will improve us.”
“I feel proud because, after [losing at] Newcastle, a team like Brighton is difficult to play; the first 20 minutes, we scored twice and controlled the game.”
It’s quite impressive that we were able to claw our way back from a discouraging 4-1 loss to Newcastle and win 3-2 with just 10 men. Even though we let two goals, we played better this time, didn’t let our guard down, and stayed close to preserving the lead. The game was difficult, and the extra ten minutes seemed to drag on forever. When Joao Pedro scored the second goal, everything fell apart, but we kept our composure.
We won the game by exercising discipline and resiliency. Many might contend that this wasn’t a particularly convincing victory, but we’ll take three points over performance any day.
