Chelsea added more injury woes after Robert Sanchez and Marc Cucurella picked up injuries in a 2-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday lunchtime.
Abdoulaye Doucoure and Lewis Dobbin’s goals in the second half handed Chelsea yet another demoralising loss, sending them down to 12th position in the Premier League. To exacerbate the situation, the Blues witnessed Ian Dorde Petrovic and Ian Maatsen replace Sanchez and Cucurella, who were limped off the pitch in the 84th minute, respectively.
However, before them, Reece James was subbed off in the 27th minute of the game after the right-back was holding his hamstring and was replaced by Levi Colwill. With a growing injury list, Mauricio Pochettino’s stint at Chelsea is turning out to be way worse than expected, and now his first-choice players could see a long spell out.
During the post-match press conference, the Argentine manager confirmed Sanchez and Cucurella’s injury status, (h/t Metro), and said:
‘‘He [Sanchez] suffered a problem against Manchester United in his knee, and he felt something in the second half. I hope it is not a big issue like when Marc Cucurella twisted his ankle. I hope we can recover as soon as possible.”
Given that he twisted his ankle, Cucurella might play again soon; however, it will mostly depend on the extent of the injury. Sanchez’s decision to play despite his injury against Manchester United speaks volumes about our staff’s negligence in handling player injuries. However, Maatsen and Petrovic now have an incredible chance to establish themselves and earn Pochettino’s preference in the upcoming games as a result of their injuries.
Maatsen, who hasn’t played as a fullback this season, will have his moment if Pochettino decides against keeping Colwill at left-back. Petrovic has been employed between the sticks since joining the club and will have a terrific prospect of becoming Chelsea’s starting custodian if he shines in Sanchez’s absence.
