According to Daily Mail, Chelsea may be forced to put Conor Gallagher on sale in the next transfer window to fund the club’s next signing after Mauricio Pochettino confirmed the Blues will look for more acquisitions in January.
Gallagher has 18 months left on his contract and is yet to extend his deal, but if there are no talks of a new contract, the midfielder might be offloaded in January.
However, there are signs that talks have been progressing between the club and the midfielder. But it could all come down to the club’s decision in the end, as some club members believe selling Gallagher will result in a good profit.
Given that the club could struggle with the Premier League financial fair play rule if they don’t offload more players by next summer and despite progress in his performance, Gallagher’s future remains uncertain at Chelsea.
The former Blues legend John Obi-Mikel reveals that the England international wouldn’t start a game back in the day at the club, speaking on his podcast, he said:
“He’s a decent player. Is he a Chelsea midfield player? Starting XI? Back in the day, when we were playing, would Gallagher get into the starting XI? No chance; I don’t think so.”
The club believes they can make a significant profit from his sale because of his elevated performance over time. If they feel they need to utilise the money for a new acquisition, then be it—experienced players should be brought in rather than rookies who require time to get used to the league. Gallagher has been fantastic for us, but it’s too soon to make any decisions on his future at this time.
Meanwhile, Mikel’s comments on Gallagher aren’t necessary because it’s obvious he wouldn’t have started. After all, the Blues had some of the best midfield players in the league including Cesc Fabregas, Juan Mata, and Frank Lampard. But that was then, and as of right now, he has been in the starting lineup because his performance has proven he deserves to start each game.
