Ben Jacobs says Chelsea will go for a centre-back in January

Transfer expert Ben Jacobs has confirmed that Chelsea will enter the January market for a centre-back, mainly their former academy product and Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

The Blues are also looking to sell Trevoh Chalobah and Malang Sarr to make space for a signing once the winter window arrives and they will also look to add a defender.

Considering Thiago Silva is in his 40s, the Blues would want a quality defender to fill in the void next season. Silva may or may not extend his deal, which remains to be seen.

Jacobs further clarified that there will be talks with Mauricio Pochettino and the board in December over the signing of a defender. The Blues are looking at a few positions to reinforce them.

Jacobs, who spoke to CaughtOffside for his exclusive Daily Briefing column, updated Chelsea’s plans for signing a defender in winter transfer window and revealed:

“Keep in mind Mauricio Pochettino would ideally like a bit of proven Premier League quality. That’s why I would keep an eye on Chelsea entering the race for a player like Marc Guehi, who they sold to Crystal Palace in 2021.”

“Plenty of clubs are looking. There’s nothing advanced at Chelsea’s end yet, and there may be a bit of a difference of opinion between the profile in this position that Pochettino wants (for the ‘now’) and the recruitment team is trying for (depth, or for the ‘future’).”

Hopefully, there will be an amicable discussion between Pochettino and the board because the manager should decide what he wants, given that he is the one who feels the defender can fit into his system, and hopefully. The board should take that into consideration and just shouldn’t go ahead and sign a young player. The 51-year-old needs to have his say during transfer dealings and decide which player he wants who will prove his calibre right away.

When it comes to making transfers, Pochettino and the board should be in agreement. Hopefully, Chelsea will pay attention to the Argentine manager’s request for a Premier League player with experience. We should only sign experienced players, which will make Pochettino’s job less demanding.
