Frank Lampard concedes he desperately wanted to bring Jude Bellingham to Chelsea

Frank Lampard insists he desperately wanted to bring Jude Bellingham to Chelsea when he was the manager of the club.

However, he was unable to persuade those in positions of authority to bring him to the club. The midfielder later signed with Borussia Dortmund before joining Real Madrid this season.

With 13 goals in 14 games for Real Madrid, the 20-year-old is currently regarded as one of the most promising midfielders in Europe, and his time there has been nothing but great.

The Blues are undoubtedly regretting passing up the opportunity to sign him while he was so inexpensively available. Bellingham is a naturally gifted midfield player, and it has been exhilarating to watch his meteoric rise.

Such opportunities are extremely uncommon. You may find a really promising player for a lesser cost, but you might realise at that point that he is not the guy you need. Later, you may regret not signing him when you see him go on to become one of the best players on another team.

Lampard later explained how he couldn’t sign Bellingham at Chelsea when he was at the helm, speaking to the Obi One Podcast, he said:

“When I was managing at Chelsea, I was desperate to bring Jude Bellingham in. But I couldn’t get it through upstairs—the idea of paying £20 million for someone his age.”

Lampard identifying such talented players should be applauded, and the former midfielder can consider becoming sporting director because he has found many such talented players and felt like bringing them to Chelsea but was disappointed by the lack of backing by the board.

Additionally, he intended to bring Erling Haaland and Declan Rice before they were such well-known players. While he was the manager of the team, the board never gave him complete support. What would have happened if Bellingham had joined us at that moment is now one of those fantastic stories we will never know.
