Chelsea forward Cole Palmer says he thought England call-up was a bluff

Chelsea star Cole Palmer has been picked up by Gareth Southgate for the England Euro 2024 qualifier game against North Macedonia and Malta.

Palmer’s move to Chelsea has been the best decision he has made after struggling to get playing time at Manchester City. The 21-year-old has four goals for the Blues this season.

Under Mauricio Pochettino, he has shown to be an essential member of Chelsea’s squad as he has only grown better. The former City forward is still making an impression on the pitch, and when he plays for England, he will have the possibility to showcase what he has to offer.

He certainly deserved that call-up, given how instantly he has shown his credentials at Chelsea despite being young. The England call-up will keep his form intact and momentum up.

Palmer’s efforts have paid off, as the forward may make his Three Lions senior debut. However, when the former City player received the text from Southgate about the call-up, he was taken aback.

The England official site posted a clip on X. Where Palmer and Gallagher met each other, the midfielder congratulated him and asked him:

“Congratulations; I didn’t realise you were called up.” Palmer was then heard replying, “I thought it was a blag at first. It looked real, so”

Of course, it could have seemed that way since, for many players, playing for your nation is an honour. Palmer’s call-up at age 21 will undoubtedly be remembered as a career highlight because of how much he established himself at Chelsea right away. Under Pochettino, his transition has been seamless and excellent.

Palmer’s odds of making the Euro 2024 squad the following season will also increase as a result. The Three Lions are among the favourites to win the Euro the following year because of their strong roster and abundance of depth. It will be a huge moment for Palmer if he plays a significant role.
