According to Wales Online, young Chelsea defender Bashir Humphreys has agreed to join Swansea City on a season-long loan and will undergo medical to complete the move.
Humphreys has been a transfer target for the Welsh club for the last few days now, but Chelsea blocked a move as Mauricio Pochettino admired the player and his qualities.
But, with the deadline looming, it seems as if Swansea have struck an agreement to sign the 20-year-old. The Championship side get a talented player for a season.
The England U20 international is a centre-back who has played as a defensive midfielder before. He started out at Reading U18 before moving to the Chelsea youth side four years ago.
The 20-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at German club Paderborn. He made 13 appearances in all competitions for the second-division Bundesliga side.
Having only made two appearances for the Chelsea senior team, Humphreys lacks experience of featuring for the Blues regularly. Hence, this season-long loan move to Swansea could be an excellent education for him.
Championship is one of the toughest leagues to play football in. If Humphreys does well there in the next 10 months, there might be an opening for him in the Chelsea team next season onward.
From Chelsea’s viewpoint, they did the sensible thing by letting him go. Pochettino has enough options in defence for this season. Moreover, with no European football, the manager does not have to think about heavy rotation to protect some of the players from being overplayed.
We would expect the Blues hierarchy to keep a close eye on how Humphreys fares in Wales.
