Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has called for patience regarding “anxious” striker Nicolas Jackson following his recent goal in the 1-0 victory over Brighton.
Jackson scored his just second goal for Chelsea on Wednesday since a £32 million summer move from Villarreal.
According to Metro, Pochettino understands the pressure the 22-year-old has to deliver goals. He appreciates the Senegal international’s eagerness but urges perspective.
“He is very anxious to score and do well, so sometimes you forget things, he is growing fast. After the goal he scored against Brighton, I hope his confidence will be better.”
Nicolas Jackson will be missing Monday’s derby against Fulham due to suspension. Jackson has already picked up five yellow cards in his first eight matches in the blue jersey. It seems that the 22-year-old packs a lot of aggression however he is failing to identify the correct space to utilise them.
Nevertheless, Mauricio Pochettino hopes the Brighton goal provides a platform going forward.
The manager has frequently backed Jackson despite the striker’s poor start. Pochettino believes time and support will be key to unlocking the talented forward’s potential.
“We talk a lot between the players and us, the coaching staff, It’s things you cannot stop. He is very anxious to score and do well, so sometimes you forget things. He is growing fast. Now we are going to miss him on Monday but after the goal he scored against Brighton, I hope his confidence will be better.”
With Jackson out, it leaves Armando Broja as the only typical striker available. However, Pochettino will definitely be against using the fresh out a long injury Broja.
Under these circumstances, Pochettino may hand youngster Cole Palmer his first league start against Fulham after an impressive League Cup display. The Argentine was happy with the 21-year-old Palmer’s display against Brighton.
“I’m so happy with his performance [against Brighton]. After only a few weeks with us he was able to perform very well and fit in the team. He is a young, talented player. For sure he is on my mind [for Monday].”
Pochettino’s faith in Chelsea’s youth is clear. But he also understands the pressure they feel to instantly deliver.
