Mauricio Pochettino believes Chelsea need to be more aggressive to win games

Mauricio Pochettino wants to instil a winning mentality and has advised Chelsea to be more aggressive in games as his side looks to end their terrible run of form when they meet Bournemouth on Sunday.

The Argentine manager said he was disappointed going into the international break following the defeat to Nottingham Forest after a midfield mistake resulted in their goal. The defeat leaves us languishing in mid table in spite of the heavy investment into the playing squad.

In four Premier League games, Chelsea have only managed one victory. We are currently under scrutiny as to whether or not the team can withstand pressure despite the owners’ significant financial investments.

Despite a marked improvement in performance following Pochettino’s appointment, Chelsea’s goal slump continues to be the team’s major liability. This inability has cost us dear, especially in closely fought games.

The manager will be hoping this doesn’t loom around for longer when they face Bournemouth. Speaking to the media when he was questioned if players have the qualities, (h/t Daily Mail) he said:

‘’We need to be a bit more naughty on how to win. We need to be more aggressive in this type of situation. (I was really naughty, the worst. I was the most competitive, but without the quality that we have on this team. They are much better than me about quality, but here (taps head), I was stronger than them.”

When competing in the Premier League, winning requires a certain level of aggression and pragmatism. To deal with Premier League tactics, a player needs to show fight as ability on the ball can only take you so far. We are a very young team, so it will take time for Pochettino’s squad to develop that aggressiveness. Hopefully that happens sooner rather than later.

We will develop gradually with each game because last season’s shift in management resulted in a change in pattern where players were unable to mesh, and we closed the season on a dismal note. This time, we must have faith in our manager and he will eventually deliver. At least we hope that will be the case.
