Chelsea sound out interest in Atletico Madrid centre-back Jose Maria Gimenez with Manchester United also keen

As per Fichajes, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Manchester United have sounded out their interest in signing Atletico Madrid centre-back Jose María Gimenez.

The 28-year-old has a contract until 2025, but it’s likely the Spanish club could look to sell him due to his frequent injuries, which have impacted his performance. Following his arrival at Atletico, he was regarded as an integral pillar of the club, but his constant injuries have now made him a fringe player for Diego Simeone.

Besides Chelsea and United, Inter Milan are also keen on signing the Uruguayan defender, and it was understood the aforementioned club could make a move for him next season.

Chelsea currently don’t need another injury-prone player, as they have their own star who has been sidelined for months to deal with. Besides this, the Blues have enough defenders to cover for other injured players. United could need one considering the majority of their stars are injured, and signing the 28-year-old could give them much-needed depth.

He is a seasoned defender and given that he played under Diego Simeone, a coach whose philosophy centres on playing defensive football, he would undoubtedly make a good addition to other interested parties. Chelsea already have a few brilliant defenders, so they don’t currently require a centre-back. We require greater proficiency and diverse choices for attack. We would benefit from having a proven striker, so signing Gimenez is not a move we need currently.

As of right now, United just have Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez, with Raphael Varane out with an injury and Harry Maguire hasn’t been trusted enough with his performances Gimenez can therefore provide them with good defensive quality, just like Inter, who have improved under Simone Inzaghi.

However, let’s see if Atletico will be interested in selling the centre-back or if he wants to leave the club. Given Chelsea’s roster of centre-backs, we are better off seeking a short term option to mitigate for injury issues that might crop up.
