According to Evening Standard, Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah is close to leaving the club following the news that the Blues have agreed a deal to sign Axel Disasi.
The Athletic (subscription required) revealed a day ago that Chelsea have agreed a £38m deal with French side AS Monaco to sign Disasi. The club had to act fast to get defensive reinforcement days after Wesley Fofana did his ACL and will miss the majority of the coming season.
Chalobah believes the arrival of Disasi means he is unlikely to get regular game time. The likes of Thiago Silva, Levi Colwill and Benoit Badiashile are already ahead of him in the pecking order.
The 24-year-old has ambitions of featuring for England in the Euros next summer. Inter Milan were interested in signing him earlier in the window. It remains to be seen whether they or any other club come up with a bid in the coming days. Chelsea have set a price tag of £45m, which is ambitious, to say the least.
Amidst all of this, Chelsea are doing the right thing by offering Chalobah an exit route this summer. There was no point in keeping him for the sake of it. He is at an age where playing football is the only way he further develops as a player.
If the Blues get the money they spent on Disasi back from Chalobah’s sale, we can say that’s good business. Even a bid something close to the former’s transfer fee should be acceptable to the club.
It seems hard to envisage a club meeting that price tag, otherwise. Chalobah is young, homegrown and has enough Premier League experience but he hasn’t done anything to warrant a £45m tag yet.
Let’s hope that the latter gets a suitor sooner rather than later. With the new season starting less than two weeks from now, it would be great if he joins the new club before the actual games begin.
