Levi Colwill has signed a new six-year contract at Chelsea with an option to extend that by a year

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has signed a new six-year contract with the club to commit his long-term future here. The new contract has the option to extend by a year.

A couple of days ago, The Athletic (subscription required) revealed that the Blues and Colwill have agreed on a new contract. Mauricio Pochettino confirmed that the player will get a starting role in the team but warned that he would need to earn the right to get regular minutes.

Earlier in the summer, when the 20-year-old was with England for the U21 Euros, Evening Standard reported that a new contract is on the table for him. But, he wanted to have a conversation with the manager first before putting pen to it.

It seems like the conversation went well in the past few days and here we are getting the news that he is going to stay at Stamford Bridge for the coming six years. Here’s what Colwill said immediately after signing the contract (quoted by Sky Sports):

“It’s always been an easy decision. As I’ve grown up, all I’ve known is Chelsea. I’ve spoken with the manager and he’s given me reassurance, that trust I needed. He’s spoken with me not just as a player but a person. It’s made a big difference.”

This also puts to bed any rumours linking him to various Premier League clubs. Liverpool and Manchester City were closely monitoring his development while Brighton saw a bid rejected by Chelsea.

After all, Colwill gained a reputation and attention by doing well for the Seagulls on loan last season. So, it is understandable why they wanted to get him back on a permanent payroll.

With Benoit Badiashile still recovering from his hamstring injury, we might see the young English defender starting the first game of the season against Liverpool.

There is a high chance the 20-year-old comes up against the likes of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and co. If he starts that game and passes the defensive test, it would be a good base to work his way up in the campaign.
