Chelsea have confirmed that Christopher Nkunku will miss three and a half months of action after undergoing knee surgery. The 25-year-old limped off during our 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund in the pre-season game earlier this summer.
It was earlier reported the former RB Leipzig player would miss only a few weeks. But he has sustained meniscus damage in his left knee, necessitating an operation and giving Chelsea fans another reason to be frustrated about.
The 25-year-old will join Wesley Fofana on the sidelines after the Frenchman ruptured his ACL. While the signing of Axel Disasi does ease the options in the backline, the same cannot be said of Mauricio Pochettino’s choices in the attack.
Now this could force the Blues to look for attacking options before the summer transfer window is up. Nkunku made a great impression during the pre-season tour as he excelled in the centre-forward role and behind the striker as well.
Chelsea’s official site, (h/t The Guardian), has confirmed the length of the France international injury and released a statement reading as follows:
“Nkunku has sustained a knee injury, which will rule the forward out for an extended period. The 25-year-old has undergone an operation and will now begin a rehabilitation programme.”
It’s never a good indication to start a season with two key players already sidelined, so the Blues should consider bringing in a forward if necessary. Due to his expertise and bright preseason, Nkunku might have started the match against Liverpool. He may now miss the first half of the season, which is really unfortunate for us.
It’s fortuitous that Raheem Sterling and Mukhaylo Mudryk can act as his backup players. In contrast to Sterling, who played admirably but will be relied upon owing to his greater experience, Mudryk seemed to enjoy the preseason tour and appears ready to start games regularly for us in the upcoming campaign.
