As per a tweet from transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have agreed terms with Championship side Ipswich Town to send young winger Omari Hutchinson on a season-loan loan.
Chelsea signed Hutchinson from the Arsenal youth side last summer. The 19-year-old forward played only 49 minutes for the Blues senior team last season.
He had good returns playing for the U21 side though, with eight goals and 10 assists in 25 appearances. He was an England youth international before switching allegiances and representing Jamaica at the senior level.
The 19-year-old is an attacking midfielder who has been used as a winger more often in the recent past. He is a tricky player who loves to dribble past defenders, create chances and score goals.
With the chances of him not playing much for the Chelsea senior team very high, it made a lot of sense to agree on a loan deal with Ipswich. The Tractor Boys are in the Championship now.
If Hutchinson plays a major part in Ipswich’s season and propel them to a good finish in the England second division, he would have done enough to attract the attention of Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino.
A lot can happen in football between now and next summer. The player’s job is to make this loan move count. Rest, it would be up to the manager to decide what to do and how to get the best out of him.
For Chelsea, while it is good to let go of the players and lighten the books, the focus must now shift to making signings. The midfield has a gaping hole that needs to be filled sooner rather than later.
On Hutchinson, we wish him the best at Ipswich and hope he realises his potential there.
