As per the Guardian, Chelsea won’t meet Brighton’s price valuation of £100m for Ecuadorian midfielder Moises Caicedo. They want to pay £80m and negotiate the deal.
The report reveals that the Seagulls believe the benchmark for this summer has been set by Arsenal signing West Ham United’s Declan Rice for £105m. Hence, they want something in the region of £100m for Caicedo.
There is no doubt that the Ecuadorian is Chelsea’s top midfield target for this summer window. When we talk about the Rice deal inflating the price, the £106.8m Chelsea spent to sign Enzo Fernandez in January won’t help matters if and when they sit at the table with Brighton.
The Blues have sold three and let go of one midfielder in the past few days. As of now, Mauricio Pochettino only has Fernandez and Conor Gallagher as options for the central midfield position.
The club must do their best to sign one, if not two midfielders in the coming days. Caicedo being one of the signings could change the game. The Ecuador international can form a solid partnership with Fernandez in the middle of the park.
How to negotiate the 21-year-old’s price down to their level though? Brighton are notoriously a hard nut to crack in transfer markets. Can Chelsea find a creative solution to make them agree on a deal of around £80m? Well, there might not be another option too.
A nervy few days coming up for the Blues supporters. Delaying the offer can lurk other clubs into the equation. Manchester United are already circling around the possibility to make a move for the midfielder.
Let’s hope Chelsea find a solution soon and at least put it on the table for Brighton to consider.
