Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino reveals he had talks with Levi Colwill amidst interest from Liverpool

In his first press conference, Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino confirms that he has had talks with Levi Colwill amidst interest from Liverpool in the defender.

A few days ago, Evening Standard revealed that the Blues have offered a new contract to the defender. But, the Englishman isn’t ready to accept it before speaking to the manager about his future in SW6.

It was reported that Colwill has doubts regarding his game time here because Chelsea already have Benoit Badiashile in their ranks, a player very similar in profile and style to the 20-year-old. That would, of course, worry the former Brighton & Hove Albion centre-back.

A couple of days ago, Liverpool made a fresh enquiry about the possibility of signing the defender. Here’s Pochettino on speaking to Colwill and Noni Madueke ahead of the England U-21 Euros Final, in which both the Chelsea players are participating (h/t Football London):

“We spoke yesterday with Levi and Noni. One I know, Noni, from Tottenham, in the Under-18s. Of course Levi I know. I wish them all the best tomorrow. It’s true that, for me, it’s difficult because they’re in Spain. We wish them all the best. We’re waiting for them to be in the team. I think they will fly to America and join us.”

The last sentence tells us that the manager is confident about having Colwill in the pre-season and beyond. Although he mentioned that the conversation was regarding the Euros final, it is not hard to guess that future at Chelsea was part of the topic list discussed.

If we look at the situation from the player’s viewpoint, there is a case to be made as to why he is doubtful about signing a new deal with the club.

With no European football for Pochettino’s men next season, there might be a scenario where the manager does not rotate much in league games and hope the core base of the team starts the majority of those games.

If Colwill is not picked in the centre-back pairing of the campaign, he could be found playing the waiting game before his chance comes. Let’s hope a resolution is found quickly because the 20-year-old is a fantastic player who would be incredible for Chelsea in years to come.
