RB Leipzig sporting director Max Eberl gives cryptic reply on Christopher Nkunku transfer to Chelsea

Following Leipzig’s victory in the DFB-Pokal final, (h/t Football.London) RB Leipzig sporting director Max Eberl has revealed that Christopher Nkunku will join Chelsea.

The 25-year-old made a pre-contract agreement with Chelsea and will start training with them in preseason after completing his physical.

Chelsea dispatched scouts to observe the Frenchman, though, before he was signed, and they were impressed by his performance, which led to them pursuing him. Having struggled with the likes of Timo Werner, Romelu Lukaku and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in recent seasons, perhaps the former PSG man is the answer to our problems.

His £53 million release clause has already been paid by West Londoners. The 25-year-old and Niclas Fullkrug each scored 16 goals in the Bundesliga, and despite missing a lot of games, they shared the golden boot award.

And he ended the season on a high note as he led Leipzig to a 2-0 DFB-Pokal win over Eintracht Frankfurt, and the forward was involved in both goals. He scored the winning goal of the game, then assisted Dominik Szoboszlai for the second goal.

And after the game, the Leipzig sporting director was asked about Nkunku’s future, and he gave a very coy reply as he told German Sky Sports: “He could be.” It sounds like the response of a man who knows that there is something very serious between Nkunku and Chelsea.

His early-season signing was one of the best moves that the club have made; to be honest, if they had signed him now when he was doing extremely well, he probably would have cost a lot more.

Given Mason Mount and Joao Felix could leave next season, Nkunku’s addition to the offence will hugely benefit us, and the French international has already proven himself to be a capable goal scorer in the Bundesliga this year.

More Chelsea News:

Despite missing most of the season’s games, he came back strong and scored 16 goals to take home the golden boot. He will bring a lot of quality up front, and let us not forget about his immaculate versatility, which allows him to play virtually anywhere on the field.
