Former French international Bixente Lizarazu backs Christopher Nkunku to come good at Chelsea

Former French international and Bayern Munich fullback Bixente Lizarazu has backed Christopher Nkunku to be great for Chelsea.

Nkunku is set to join the Blues this summer, having agreed on a deal a few months ago. He bid his goodbye to RB Leipzig after their last game of the season.

The Frenchman had been in terrific form for the German in the past two seasons. If we look at his numbers from the start of the 2021/22 campaign, the 25-year-old has scored 58 goals and assisted 29 in 88 appearances in all competitions. He is a versatile forward player who can play anywhere across the front line.

Here’s what Lizarazu said when asked about how good Nkunku will be for Chelsea (h/t Wettbasis, via Football.London):

“His development was rapid and spectacular. He has become a complete player, capable of being used in almost any position in attack.

“Certainly the competition is greater in the Blues than in Leipzig, but there too he has the potential and the prerequisites to become a permanent fixture very quickly. His style of play with his speed, pace and technical qualities could create a lot of spectacle and enthusiasm in the Premier League…”

With regard to the skills he possesses, the French international is great at dribbling past defenders, can carry the ball forward from deeper positions, has a good shot in him, can create chances and has a good pace to trouble defenders with runs in behind.

He can play as a number 10 in Mauricio Pochettino’s 4-2-3-1 system and flourish behind a striker, provided Chelsea sign a number nine who can link up with the likes of Nkunku and the two wingers.

There is no reason why the 25-year-old would not be a success at Stamford Bridge. The key would be to make a good start and get the clarity of role from the management staff. Once that happens, his qualities would take over to cause havoc among Premier League defenders.

The former Paris-Saint Germain player is now experienced enough to know what the team requires and what he can do to turn games in their favour. In a way, Pochettino can rely on him to create magical moments out of nowhere to win points for the team.
