As per a tweet from transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has agreed on personal terms with Saudi club Al Ahli and is closing on a move.
It is also revealed that the negotiations are in the final stage and a permanent deal will be completed very soon. Senegal international will get a contract until 2026.
Mendy’s future at Chelsea was anyway uncertain since the time he rejected a new contract offer from the club late last year. A few days ago, Sky Sports revealed that the new Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino is keen on offering the number one spot to Kepa Arrizabalaga next season.
When Mendy first arrived at the club back in 2020, he immediately replaced a struggling Kepa in goal and made a terrific impact with consistent performances in goal.
He was one of the main reasons why Chelsea lifted the Champions League and had a decent 2021/22 season despite external disturbances.
But, things started taking a dip since the start of the 2022/23 campaign. After Thomas Tuchel was sacked, the Senegal international was dropped by Graham Potter.
Although currently short on confidence, the 31-year-old is still a good goalkeeper who would do well for the next team he is signing for – Al Ahli.
Let’s hope that the money Chelsea get from this deal will be used in the right manner in the transfer market. The Blues must sign a striker and bolster the midfield department as well.
The key would be to sign the right players rather than many players. The last thing Pochettino would want is a bloated squad going into a season where there is no European football to navigate.
