According to Italian outlet TMW (h/t Football London), Chelsea’s attempt to sign 27-year-old Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana were rebuffed by the Italian outfit.
Chelsea have undergone one of the worst seasons in the club’s history, that too in the first year of the new ownership under Todd Boehly and therefore looks set to add more players to have a solid start come to the next campaign.
While the past year has seen us do a spending spree on the transfer market, the squad, although bloated, look short on the quality needed for us to challenge at the top again.
One such position is of the goalkeeping situation with both Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy not up to the standard anymore of being the team’s no.1.
Hence, acquiring a top goalkeeper is of utmost importance and the Chelsea board has identified Onana as one of the potential targets.
Onana, who joined Inter on a free transfer, has been sensational for the Serie A side and is partly the reason behind the team’s run to the UEFA Champions League final.
A good shot-stopper with a big presence in the box, Onana’s biggest strength is his ability with the ball and how he acts as the first player in the build-up.
Modern football requires the goalkeepers to be comfortable with their feet which can allow teams to swiftly build from the back. Onana gives that platform to the managers.
However, Inter are aware of the prized asset that they have on their hands and feels Chelsea’s initial bid of £61m is not enough for Onana.
A fee of at least €70million is likely to be paid to get Inter to come to the table, which although is high considering he was signed on a free, his contract at the club runs till 2027 and therefore Inter are not in a rush to sell the player in the coming window.
Considering they have an all-important UEFA Champions League final against Manchester City, chances are that any potential deal would only take place after the final on June 10th.
