Wesley Fofana defends Chelsea interim manager Frank Lampard

Wesley Fofana has defended the appointment of Frank Lampard as the Chelsea interim manager. He believes a change was necessary, despite the 44-year-old’s three defeats in his first three matches.

Lampard was hired as Chelsea’s temporary manager until the end of the current campaign, although his second tenure at the Bridge has not gone well.

Given his long history with the team, it was anticipated the former player would improve matters. But the club’s continued mediocrity at the bottom of the standings has had the opposite effect.

And now his side will play Real Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League’s last of eight on Tuesday night. With a two-goal lead to overcome, the Blues will have their work cut out.

Fofana, though, has supported Lampard’s hiring and believes it was necessary. Fofana remarked in a statement to the French publication Telefoot through GFFN (h/t Mirror):

“He was welcomed back in the best way possible, because he’s Mr. Frank Lampard. He’s a club legend. He told us to get our confidence back and play simple football again. To get back to the basics, really. His words moved us all, because it’s what we needed to get our confidence back. And to realise that we’re fighting for a club. We’re fighting for a great club.”

Clubs shouldn’t have lost three games under their management and made matters worse if his remarks had truly influenced the players.

We are losing games against inferior clubs, which demonstrates how far down the pecking order we have descended. The club is in disarray, and players have been exposed as being clueless during games.

However, blaming Lampard is also unacceptable since Todd Boehly made a mistake by appointing him as a temporary manager given his terrible management track record. It could have been a manager with a strong track record who could handle big personalities and fix dysfunctional teams.

But given that the season is coming to an end and cannot be fixed, Instead, we hope that a more capable manager is appointed and can put things right.
