Graham Potter explains why Mason Mount did not play against Aston Villa

Speaking in the post-match press conference as quoted by Football. London, Chelsea boss Graham Potter explained why he did not use Mason Mount at all in the game against Aston Villa.

Returning from the international break, a strong reaction would have been expected from the Blues. However, they were really disappointing, with the club losing 2-0 to Unai Emery’s side.

After a few weeks of positive results, it felt like a ‘return to square one’ for Chelsea. The bad habits crept back into their game and they really struggled to create anything meaningful.

Despite the need for attacking impetus, one player who remained on the bench throughout was Mason Mount. The English attacking midfielder is really going through a tough time at Chelsea due to off-field issues.

Mount is someone who can change the game with one pass or a moment of magic as he has done so often for us in the past. Despite this, Potter chose to leave him on the bench as he watched his side slump to yet another defeat.

Speaking about why he did not use the talented midfielder at all in the game against Villa, here is what Potter had to say.

“With Mason, I just felt we were there in the game. We made some attacking subs and wanted to see how it all landed. Mason is coming back and only had a couple of days training”

Only time will tell what happens to Mason at Chelsea. The talented midfielder has been a Blues boy throughout his career but it looks like all that could be coming to an end.

If Potter really wants to turn the situation around, he’d be better off trusting Mount in his side and starting him than leaving him on the bench. We have seen in the past just how good he can be.

Let’s see if there is a chance for Mount to turn the situation around at the Bridge. It looks unlikely but for the sake of the club and Potter, let’s hope that there is.
