Glen Johnson has advised Chelsea to sell Liverpool and Manchester United target Mason Mount

Glen Johnson has encouraged Chelsea to sell Mason Mount in the summer after the midfielder failed to reach an agreement on Mason Mount’s contract renewal.

His contract with Chelsea expires in 2024, (Transfermarkt) and clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United are keen on signing the 24-year-old. That, of course, would mean that any sale of the England international to these two teams would directly strengthen them at our expense.

Besides his contract difficulties, Mount has had a disappointing season due to an abdominal issue that has limited him to 23 Premier League games. However, Under Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, the 24-year-old had remained a regular starter.

Moreover, Mount hasn’t played for Chelsea since the team’s 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on February 26.

However, Johnson feels that if Chelsea are not able to extend Mount’s contract in the summer window then they should consider selling him. During his interview with DAZN Bet, via FourFourTwo (h/t Football.London), Johnson, who played as a right-back for teams such as Chelsea and Liverpool, said:

“I think he is more than good enough to play at that level; I really like him. At the moment, Chelsea should take £70 million because Mason Mount hasn’t been the same and Chelsea may need to take the money after all their signings.”

“It also depends on who the next manager is, because [Mount] may be able to bounce back if there is a top manager like Tuchel who wants to bring in other top players to play alongside him.”

As he has played relatively little this season owing to an abdominal injury, judging his future based on his performance seems irrational. There are times when a player has bad form, and this season may be such a time for Mount. Despite this, he is still a top-tier midfielder for Chelsea.

Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Bruno Saltor and now Frank Lampard have managed Chelsea for at least one game this season. Managerial changes and tactical switches aren’t always easy for every player. Mount’s teammates haven’t been very good either.

More Chelsea News:

With Frank Lampard’s arrival, fans can be hopeful that he commits to Chelsea for a number of years to come; if not, £70 million sounds like a reasonable profit if he departs in the summer. Lampard and Mount share a brilliant bond since their time together at Derby County and Chelsea. Let’s see if Lampard’s influence, be it temporary, is enough to keep Mount on board.
