Graham Potter uses Jurgen Klopp example as Chelsea boss faces the heat after Spurs loss

Chelsea manager Graham Potter has noted the burden on Jurgen Klopp’s position at Liverpool. Potter brought up other managers once more when talking about his position at Stamford Bridge.

On Sunday, Chelsea’s terrible recent run of play continued. The Blues’ terrible streak extended after their 2-0 loss to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, making it just one win in the last 11 games across competitions for us.

Liverpool have experienced its fair share of issues. They played out a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace on Saturday after losing 5-2 to Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Chelsea have laboured in front of goal, notably scoring just once during their current losing streak. Despite two hefty transfer windows, the Blues seem to be going backwards and lacking an identity.

Klopp is enduring worst time as Liverpool as Potter at Chelsea.

In his post-match press conference, Potter also highlighted the pressure on Klopp’s future. The 47-year-old acknowledged (h/t Express.UK) that was part of the job’s requirements and warned that Liverpool are facing a similar situation.

“There is always that question, absolutely, and you can’t stop the questions. While the results are what they are, I accept them. It’s part of the job.

“We were talking before the game about watching Arsenal All or Nothing, and two years into Mikel [Arteta’s] reign, he is close to getting the sack and people want him out. It was seen as a disaster, but things have now changed a bit.

“If you look at Jurgen’s situation, they haven’t got the results and all of a sudden people want him out. That is the nature of football. I haven’t done enough at this club to have too much good faith; I also accept that.”

However, given that Klopp was hired by Liverpool in 2015, has won the Premier League and the Champions League, and has a very different managerial background, Potter wanted to make it clear that he wants the same level of support from the Chelsea fans if they want to see the team grow into a dominant one in the future.

The former Swansea City manager anticipates that supporters should continue to show their loyalty to the team and to him, as much as Liverpool and Arsenal supporters did with Klopp and Mikel Arteta, respectively.

In fairness, the change at Liverpool was marked under Klopp from the first season itself. He worked on a limited budget and the team was showcasing an identity on the pitch from the get-go, even if it did take them a long time to win their first trophy (UEFA Champions League in 2019).

Potter hasn’t earned his stripes at a similar level. There has to be something positive on the pitch that fans can look at and think ‘at least this is a sign of something better to come’. What Potter has to do is figure out his best 11, implement tactics uniformly and consistently, and stick to what he believes is right for the club.

Fans can’t be faulted if they are ready to give up on the Englishman. He has to deliver at some point before he can ask for unequivocal support from the Chelsea faithful.
