Chelsea boss gives update on Thiago Silva injury after defeat to Tottenham Hotspur

Just 19 minutes into the match against Tottenham and Hotspur, Thiago Silva was replaced, compounding Chelsea’s already-existing woes.

The 38-year-old, who started the game versus Spurs at the centre of the defence, has been one of Graham Potter’s struggling team’s few bright spots this year.

Nevertheless, early in the game, after making a crucial tackle, Silva’s afternoon would abruptly end as an oncoming Harry Kane looked to land on his outstretched leg.

After the incident, the former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and AC Milan centre-back tried to continue playing but was unable to do so. He was substituted by Wesley Fofana just after 19 minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Silva was substituted in just 19 minutes against Tottenham.

Silva might miss the crucial second leg of the club’s Champions League Round of 16 matchup against Borussia Dortmund on March 7. He could, in the process, join Armando Broja, Christian Pulisic, and Edouard Mendy in the club’s treatment room.

Silva, who has only missed three Premier League games this year so far, led Potter’s team in Wednesday’s 1-0 loss at Signal Iduna Park.

Potter’s team only managed to win one of its 11 games in 2023, eliminating any possibility of finishing in the top four. Chelsea has struggled in front of goal, particularly during their current losing streak, when they have only scored once.

Silva picks an injury against Tottenham.

However, asked when the 38-year-old will be available (h/t Football.London), Potter was reluctant to give an update on Silva’s injury and said:

“Thiago I’m not sure. Hopefully, it’s not too serious, but I haven’t spoken to the doctor to get a diagnosis.”

Despite his advanced age, Silva has consistently performed at the club’s highest level. On the field, his winning attitude and temperament are unmatched and we are going to miss this if he is sidelined for a while.

More Chelsea News:

It’s disappointing to see him get hurt so soon in one of our important games, but we’re hoping it’s nothing catastrophic because his absence will undoubtedly have an impact on our backline.
