Speaking to Caught Offside, quoted by Football.London, transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has said that the negotiations for a new contract for Mason Mount at Chelsea are still an ongoing process.
In a recent report in the Daily Mail, Mount’s future at Stamford Bridge is firmly in doubt after it is deemed that both parties are a long way apart from the agreement as he believes the club are offering well below what others are earning.
The England international has his contract expiring in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt). If he does not sign an extension till the coming summer, he will enter the final 12 months of his stay here. We all know by now that Liverpool are keeping a close eye on the player if negotiations for a new contract break down.
Here’s what Romano said on this topic (h/t Football.London):
“A lot has been said about Mason Mount’s future again, particular his role in the team now that Chelsea have spent big money on the likes of Enzo Fernandez and Mykhaylo Mudryk.
“I’m told negotiations are still ongoing between Chelsea and Mount, so let’s see how the conversation will go in the next weeks and months.
“I think it would be fair to say that automatic starters don’t exist when the competition is that high, he knows he has to perform at top level to keep his place, but nothing has changed.”
Mount has been one of the best players for Chelsea in the last two years. He has played a lot of football in that time and it kind of shows in his recent tired-looking performances. With Joao Felix coming back from suspension in the next game, it would be apt for Graham Potter to drop the Englishman for the Portuguese star.
Regarding the quality of the player, Mount is still one of the best creative midfielders in the league. He is currently going through a lean patch, but that does not take away how good he had been for the Blues.
Even though the club has signed a lot of wingers and is set to welcome Christopher Nkunku in the summer – a player who likes to operate in the Mount position behind the striker – they must keep hold of the latter.
The 24-year-old has leadership qualities in him that can be harnessed along with the obvious propensity on and off the ball in the attacking midfield department.
