Speaking to Sky Sports (h/t Football.London), legendary Chelsea striker Gianfranco Zola has given the club the green light to sign Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.
A few days ago, it was reported in the Mirror that Chelsea are ready to rival Manchester United and Paris-Saint Germain for Osimhen, who is valued at around £100m by the Serie A leaders.
After failing to get much out of Romelu Lukaku last season post his £97.5m move, the Blues signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the deadline day of last summer’s window. The 33-year-old hasn’t done much to appease the fans. He has scored only three goals in 17 appearances in all competitions so far this season.
Talking about Osimhen, how good he is and stating that Chelsea will have competition for signing him, here’s Zola (h/t Football.London):
“Chelsea would have a lot of competition [for Osimhen’s signature].
“He’s a complete player. He’s a pest. I don’t know what is going to happen. We will see. I think the task in the Premier League would be different to the Italian league.”
Since the resumption of the season after the World Cup, Chelsea have scored just six goals in 10 games in all competitions. Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has outscored Graham Potter’s men by three goals in the league.
Now, those are not great readings for a club that aspires to challenge for the biggest trophies in the world. With the way the club has spent money in the last two transfer windows, they would expect to win silverware sooner rather than later.
Amidst all the creative players in the squad, Chelsea do lack a finisher in the box. Osimhen can do that and much more. The 24-year-old has scored 18 goals and assisted four in 22 appearances in all competitions for Napoli. He is currently leading the Italian side to a Scudetto win in style.
Not only is he a striker who is lethal in the opposition box, but Osimhen can also run the channels, hold the ball up, be physically strong against defenders and has the pace to burn and trouble the opposition teams at will. He would be a perfect signing for Chelsea. Let’s wait and see if we manage to get him in the summer.
